Scarborough | Revisiting The Past

Scarborough | Shifting Sands

Scarborough is somewhere that’s special to me. I can’t visit the place without it bringing back memories of childhood holidays in a time before jumping on a plane and heading for the Med was really a thing. It’s easy for those memories to resurface because the touristy South Bay of Scarborough really hasn’t changed that much since the 1970’s/80’s. The joke shop is still there. The arcades are still there. Even the shop that inexplicably gets away with selling the replica swords, knives and marijuana paraphernalia is still there. It’s easy to sit and reminisce here.

The North Bay is changing though. Yes, Peasholme Park is still there & although I didn’t see it on this visit, all the evidence is there that they still do the Naval Battles with the model ships. I don’t know if the gnome village is still there on the island or not as the bridge was closed, but I used to love that gnome village. Peering through the small windows of the houses festooned in fairy lights and seeing the little figures inside & actually believing that it was all real was magical.

What was once the quieter part of Scarborough now has quite a few new developments consisting of time-share and holiday flats. The shops just off the beach are home to two different letting agencies, sandwiching a shop selling buckets & spades. In the past, the sprawling static caravan sites, like our family favourite of the past, Primrose Valley, played home to the summer influx of tourism, but it looks as though the market is changing & people want something new.

Nb: I didn’t know whether to include the image of the memorial at the base of the tree.

In the end, I compromised. I really wanted to include it because I felt like it encapsulated the feelings that people have for special places from their life, however, I did remove the person’s name from the photograph.
